Special Times of Worship
There are also special services scheduled throughout the year. On Christmas Eve we have an early evening, candlelighting service that features the singing of Christmas carols and the reading of scripture. At 11:30 p.m. there is a late night communion service, held in Hebron House. This is a very informal service in which we sing a couple of Christmas carols, the minister preaches a brief sermon and we celebrate communion.
On Ash Wednesday, we have a special service in Hebron House to mark the beginning of the season of Lent. This service includes the imposition of ashes, the celebration of communion, and is designed to be the process of seeking to understand the importance of Christ’s death and resurrection.
As Lent draws to a close, we gather again for worship on Maundy Thursday. Often, this service is a “Tenebrae” service – in which we hear again how the “darkness” closed in on Jesus as his life came to an end. This service includes the reading of the story of Christ’s passion from one of the Gospels.
Another service that everyone looks forward to occurs on Mother’s Day. On this Sunday, the Senior High youth lead worship and preach the sermon. They take this opportunity to thank their mothers for all they have contributed to their lives. It is ALWAYS an inspiring, most meaningful service.
In recent years, Mt. Hebron has also enjoyed “contemporary” worship services. These services have always included the singing of “praise” songs led by guitar, keyboard, and a small choir. In addition, we have experimented with liturgical dance and drama as ways to communicate God’s word. These services occur three or four times a year.
